What is Body Mapping?
Body Mapping is a skin analysis treatment from Dermalogica. It is a thorough diagnosis of the body involving a visual survey of the landscape of the skin with tactile exploration. Every square inch of skin is covered with a gentle stretch and relax technique.
Skin conditions and changes, ranging from acne and dryness to cellulite and stretch marks, are observed on every inch of the skin and recorded, enabling the therapist to have a thorough understanding of the body, both instantly and comparatively on every visit.
Just as a geographical map will annotate the contours of the land, rivers and walkways, so too will the body map record every condition evident on that visit. For this purpose, the map is divided into 14 zones, front and back. It is designed to collect two kinds of information: body considerations and skin considerations.
Body considerations include fluid retention, cellulite, varicose veins, hirsutism, stretch marks and muscle tone.
Skin considerations include keratosis pilaris, atopic dermatitis, acne, psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis and sebhorrhoeic keratosis.
In the systematic zoning of the body, the therapist picks up low-key clues which may lead to genuine client breakthroughs. For example, the slightest swelling in Zone 1, the right leg, might indicate mild fluid retention around the sock line. This may be a person who sits and stands a great deal, without sufficient total-body movement for efficient lymphatic drainage. In Zone 5, the left arm may exhibit the commonly-observed build-up of skin cells in the skin’s hair follicles known as keratosis pilaris.
In addition to treating the condition that day, the therapist can discuss with the client better hydration (eg drinking more water, less coffee and alcohol) as one lifestyle strategy for minimising this tendency. Body Mapping is essentially a method for therapists to understand client’s skin in five easy steps – looking, listening, asking, touching and recording.
As a result of the body map, the therapist is able to treat the client as an individual and prescribe and give the correct treatment for them at that time. They are able to ensure that the client is not treated as a number with formulated treatments which do not take into account the specific needs of the client.
