What is Acne Treatments?

What is the cause of acne?

People commonly think that acne is caused by one's diet: a diet consisting of chocolate, fizzy drinks; generally a bad, unbalanced diet. This is not the case, and it has been shown that acne is caused by a male hormonal imbalance which can occur in both sexes. This imbalance causes the sebaceous glands to secrete an oily substance. This builds on the surface of the skin, and causes spots, blackheads, white-heads, and pimples.

Acne is a concern for many people, young and old. There are many different ways of treating it from topical products to medically prescribed treatments. There are differing treatments for acne depending upon whether it is active acne or acne scarring. In this section we will address treatments for active acne. See acne scarring for further information about treating the results of acne.

What are the treatments for acne?

Acne facials

Acne facials are an effective treatment for those who suffer with troubled skin; particularly those with teenage and adult acne. There are many different types of facials available. After cleansing acne facial treatments can include enzyme or glycolic acid exfoliation (see glycolic peel), a warm vapour mist, manual deep pore extractions, electric treatments, skin-calming or anti-bacterial masques. These treatments can be repeated at regular intervals until the problem clears or to reduce flair ups.

Chemical peel

This is where a chemical solution is applied to the face, and is left to be absorbed by the skin. After this treatment you would have to wait a maximum of two weeks, and then the skin will start peeling. The effects of the treatment depends on the type of chemical used; thus, the skin could peels a lot or, not so much; all depending on the chemical.

Microdermabrasion

This technique is known to be a quick, cheap and effective treatment for all skin types-especially acne. Microdermabrasion loosens the dead skin cells on the surface by using a buffer which fires tiny crystals; thereby allowing new skin cells to form. This improves the appearance of the skin, however more treatments are recommended to attain best results. This treatment has little, if, no side effects. It should be noted that this treatment is suitable for mild acne and, does not improve the appearance of acne scarring.

Laser treatment

This is another treatment which removes the top layer of the skin using a laser, making the appearance of your skin clearer. This technique is used as an acne treatment as well as an acne scarring treatment. This procedure is done by a doctor, thus you’ll need to have a consultation first.

Home treatments for acne

There are a range of different treatments for acne, which can be bought and used at home. Products such that contain benzoyl peroxide are very good for treating mild cases of acne. This ingredient generates oxygen in the skin, and kills off bacteria; it stops dead skin cells from blocking the pores, which would cause skin eruptions.

The best way to find out whether these treatments are suitable for you is by consulting a therapist.
