What is AHA Chemical Peel?
An AHA or Alphahydroxy acid peel is a mild peel using AHAs found naturally in sugar cane (glycolic acid), sour milk (lactic acid) and fermented grapes and citrus fruits (fruit acids).
What is it and how does it work?
AHA peels use natural acids to act as a mild peel, breaking up dead skin to create a smoother complexion. AHAs increase the elasticity of the skin and stimulate natural collagen production to smooth and lighten the epidermal surface.
The history and how it was developed
The use of AHAs to make skin look younger has been around for thousands of years; Cleopatra was known to take baths of sour Yak’s milk to improve her skin. Glycolic acid is the most common AHA used in anti-aging and acne products.
What happens during a treatment or session?
An AHA peel can be used all over the body apart from on the sensitive skin around the eyes, and is applied onto cleansed skin. After 10-15 minutes the AHA peel is washed off with cold water. This is not a deep treatment where several layers of skin are removed, so face washes and the use of creams containing AHA may be used, or further AHA peels recommended.
Who and what is it good for?
AHA peels are used for smoothing rough skin, helping reduce the appearance of acne and fine wrinkles and improving the texture of the skin after sun damage. AHA peels may also be used as a pre-treatment for TCA peels. It can be used on skin in any condition and all skin types. AHA peels are particularly good for people who cannot take the time out to recover from more intense treatments such as TCA and Phenol chemical peels.
Who is it not good for and what can the side effects be?
AHA peels may cause stinging, redness and irritation with occasional peeling or crusting. No other products should be applied to the treatment area for three hours after the peel and sunlight should be avoided. People taking acne medication should not have chemical peels.
How much will it cost?
A one off AHA peel costs around £70, with a course six sessions recommended. More sessions may be required in cases of heavy acne scarring.
